Comparative Evaluation of Iranian and World's Top Universities in Collaboration with Industry

Background and aim: Today, when economic conditions are based on knowledge, increasing the cooperation of universities in the science and technology activities of the industrial sector is one of the most important categories. The aim of this study was to conduct a comparative evaluation of the Iranian universities in the science and technology activities of industrial sector and top universities around the world.
Materials and methods: This research which is applicable in purpose and documentary in method performed using comparative citation analysis method. The population of the study was all the world's top universities indexed in the top five ranking systems of the Times, US News, Shanghai, Leiden and CiVision. Moreover, all of their science and technology activities were recorded at the Scopus from 2009 to 2018. The data were extracted from SciVal and analyzed with descriptive statistics method and Excel.
Findings: Sharif University of Technology with 0.6% and Stanford University with 7.3% had the best performance in cooperation with industry and the research findings indicated that the average cooperation of university and industry at the Iranian universities was 0.33 and at the universities of the world was 5.3. Findings related to comparing universities also showed that the level of cooperation between the world's top universities and industry reached from 5.19% in 2009 to 5.38% in 2018 and cooperation between universities and industry in Iran reached from 0.26% in 2009 to 0.35% in 2018, indicating an increasing trend. Besides, the average cooperation of top universities in Iran with industry compared to the world’s top universities is16 times less than the global average.
Conclusion: The university and industry relationship in Iran is very low and less than the global average. The results of this study can be used in science and technology policies and achieving the goals of the 1404 vision document of the country and can improve the gap created between science and technology in the country by strengthening the relationship between university and industry.
