Background and aim:Considering the lack of comprehensive research to study the structure of Iranian biotechnology field, the aim of this study was to monitor the social structure of Iranian biotechnological sciences using the social network analysis approach based on the scientific outputs of Iranians and to map the scientific communication network of the most important and active authors of Iran. Materials and methods:This applied descriptive study was conducted with a scientometric approach, using the method of creating a scientific map. The study population was all scientific articles related to the field of biotechnology in the Web of Science Core Collection during 1984-2017. First, keywords related to biotechnology during the mentioned period, i.e. 1984-2017, were searched in the advanced search of the database and the results were limited to Iran. The number of articles found based on the search strategy used was 22034 scientific backgrounds. Descriptive statistics based on social network analysis indicators were used to analyze the data, and CiteSpace software was used to create the structure and analyze the data. Findings:According to the results of this research, the trend of increasing scientific production from 2005 to 2011 was very fast, from 2012 to 2013 it was moderate, and from 2014 to 2016 it was considered fast. The quantitative expansion of scientific output in the field of Iranian biotechnology also led to a social structure and network among the actors in this field, who knew each other well and established national and international scientific communication among themselves. To show the social structure of this field, 144 influential national and international scientific personalities who were effective in Iranian scientific production in the field of biotechnology were presented graphically according to their activities in 5-year periods. Conclusion:The active researchers in this field can be divided into 40 working groups, the most important of which are human, microbial and genetic biotechnology, medical biotechnology, cancer biotechnology and cell culture.
