Background and aim: Social Network Analysis (SNA), rooted in anthropological studies of the 1930s and 1940s, is now widely employed as a quantitative method for analyzing network configurations, as well as the positions and interactions of individuals within social networks. This study aims to analyze the co-authorship network of international publications by researchers of the Agricultural Research, Education and Extension Organization (AREEO), based on micro- and macro-level indicators of social network analysis, and to identify the key authors within this network.
Materials and methods: This study was conducted with a scientometric approach. The study population comprised 24,160 articles indexed in the Scopus database, originating from 56 centers and institutes affiliated with the organization. Data were prepared in Excel software and subsequently analyzed using Gephi software. Macro-level indicators included density, network diameter, average path length, number of connected components, and clustering coefficient, while micro-level indicators included degree centrality, betweenness centrality, closeness centrality, and eigenvector centrality.
Findings: The findings indicated that the average number of authors per article was five, and the total number of citations received was 450,322, corresponding to a mean of 18.63 citations per article. The co-authorship network of the organization consisted of 52,266 nodes and 983,219 edges. The mean network density was calculated as 0.03, the network diameter as 7.41, the average path length as 3.40, and the clustering coefficient as 0.89. The mean degree was 16.8, while closeness centrality, betweenness centrality, and eigenvector centrality were 0.404, 0.003, and 0.0544, respectively. Key authors were identified across the various centrality indicators; Fereshteh Ansari, Ghasem Hosseini Salkadeh, and Meysam Tabatabaei occupied the highest positions in degree centrality, while Abbasali Motalebi ranked first in betweenness centrality.
Conclusion: The co-authorship network of the organization demonstrates a broad structure with low density and high clustering, indicating robust local collaborations alongside limited macro-level integration. Significant disparities were observed between large and small centers across co-authorship network indicators. Additionally, the four-author pattern was the dominant mode of authorship within this field, and a culture of scientific collaboration was notably more pronounced in collaborations with national centers.
