Background and aim: In today’s knowledge-based economy, universities play a pivotal role in the social, economic, and scientific development of countries. One of the key ways to fulfill this role is the internationalization of universities and their effective presence in global ranking systems. The present study aims to identify strategies for improving the international ranking of Iranian universities, with a particular focus on Kharazmi University as a case study.
Materials and methods: This research employs a qualitative approach based on content analysis. The study population consisted of faculty members at Kharazmi University with highest levels of international engagement. Fourteen participants from different faculties were selected through purposive sampling based on theoretical saturation. Data were collected via semi-structured interviews and analyzed using qualitative content analysis.
Findings: The results revealed that improving the international position of Kharazmi University requires reforms at three critical levels: macro (Ministry of Science, Research and Technology), institutional (university management), and individual (faculty members). At the macro level, revising policies related to recruitment, promotion, and scientific indexing is essential. At the institutional level, weaknesses in research management, insufficient infrastructure, and limited engagement with industry were identified as major challenges. At the individual level, lack of motivation, reliance on quantitative evaluation, and insufficient attention to professional ethics were found to undermine faculty members’ contribution to the university’s international advancement.
Conclusion: The findings indicate that achieving genuine improvement in global rankings necessitates profound transformation in the governance structure of science, national policymaking, and the redefinition of roles and responsibilities of faculty members in the higher education system.
